ART & CURRENCY: GROUP SHOW

NOVEMBER 2022 - APRIL 2023

“For decades, artists have conceptually challenged the concept of money, throwing light on what it means for our society and for humanity in general, especially in the past 70 years since the rise of consumerism and now crypto-currencies.”

With our exhibition " Art & Currency", we are presenting a dialogue between key historical artworks and newly created crypto-artworks to understand the continuity of the theme in art history. The recent development of crypto currencies offers a new research and conceptual base for contemporary artists to question the webs of power at stake behind the concept of money, while using the new blockchain technology as a creative medium.

The purpose of this exhibition is to show works by crypto-artists that are pushing the boundaries of the complicated relationship of Art & Currency. We have selected a set of crypto artists who bring forward their own critical vision of money and its meaning for our society in a digital age. Art and money have been entangled for centuries, from the market perspective of course and the famous banking patrons of the arts, such as Jacquemart Andre to a more conceptual level where currency and economics have been used as a base for artwork concepts and research.

  • In the past few years, the crypto currency market has put even more emphasis on the subject, where Bitcoin was a new way to think about money. Artists, as early as 2014, have started thinking about what this new currency meant for us as a society at a conceptual level never met before, where money becomes the central matter at hand in the artistic journey of many creative minds. NILI created NILIcoin in 2014 as a way to rethink what money means to us and Cryptograffiti used symbols of the traditional banking system, such as pieces of credit cards, to create new works highlighting how cryptocurrency changes the way we think about money.

Many times, in a satirical way, artists reappropriate currency and twist its meaning in their work, like Pascal Boyart, exploding thousands of dollar bills into portraits of new heroes like Satoshi Nakamoto, or Alotta Money, who used augmented reality to tell a new story of a $1 dollar bill. Experiments have been pushed further by artists, like Pak, who created their own currency, $BURN, out of their own artworks.

This new group show organized for the Paris art week, during Paris + by Art Basel, means to present new works by artists experimenting with currency concepts to educate, tell new stories and imagine new ways to think about currencies in the future. In a very male driven environment, either in the art market or in the currency market, we will highlight how female artists view this subject and bring some more depth to a century-old fable.
